Dr. Thomas Imwinkelried

Senior Scientist,
Responsible knowledge transfer

Dr Thomas Imwinkelried is a materials scientist with more than 20 years of industrial experience as a development engineer and project manager. During his professional career, he has mainly worked with metallic materials, from nickel-based single crystals during his doctoral thesis (1989 - 1993), the casting of thixotropic aluminium (1995 - 2001), the powder metallurgical production of titanium foam (2001 - 2006) to the biodegradation of magnesium alloys (2006 - 2014). In 2009, he was awarded the Erwin Schrödinger Prize for interdisciplinary research for his work on titanium foam - from raw material to CE approval of a spinal implant system.

Thomas Imwinkelried has been a research associate at the RMS Foundation since 2014 and is responsible for services in the areas of surfaces and tribology. He organises the elective course ‘Medical Devices’ for pharmacy students at ETH Zurich and gives a lecture at the University of Bern.
