Stefan Jakobs is a mechanical engineer at the RMS Foundation, where he has been contributing to the Bio- & Structural Mechanics group since 2017. With a strong technical background as a trained technical draftsman and constructor, he combines hands-on engineering experience with scientific rigor. He is responsible for client-based mechanical testing projects, including static, dynamic, and other complex loading scenarios. In collaboration with his team, he develops and implements customized test setups, including the design of 3D models and test procedures.
In addition to his responsibilities in applied mechanics, Mr. Jakobs plays an active role in several research initiatives. He contributes to biomechanical studies focused on orthopedic implants such as shoulder and hip endoprostheses as well as osteosynthesis systems. These projects involve close collaboration with leading European clinical partners, including the University Hospital of Bern (Inselspital) and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). His research also extends to metallic additive manufacturing, where he investigates fatigue behavior under dynamic loading conditions. Furthermore, he conducts independent research in the field of artificial intelligence, developing and programming neural networks for the automated segmentation of grain boundaries in metallographic cross-sections.
Stefan Jakobs holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Hochschule Offenburg, which he completed in 2017 following five years of academic study. During his studies, he specialized in finite element analysis (FEA) and gained industry experience in the fields of gear design, microturbine development, and sealing technology. His master’s thesis, conducted in collaboration with an industrial partner, focused on the automated generation of FE models to simulate patient-specific micromotions between the acetabular cup and pelvic bone.
