The founder of the RMS: Dr Robert Mathys

In 1946, the twenty-five-year-old Robert Mathys sets up the company Mathys, a factory for the development and production of machines, equipment, and components of special stainless and acid-resistant steels.

In 1958, the newly established Association for the Study of Internal Fixation AO/ASIF finds in Robert Mathys an industrial associate who can develop and manufacture stainless steel implants and instruments for bone surgery and orthopaedics. Robert Mathys takes over all development cost, an investment that proves far-sighted.

In 1968, he started his own development in artificial joint replacement.
On 15 February 1985, he establish the Dr Robert Mathys Foundation (RMS), a non-profit organisation for the promotion of medical and clinical research as well as technical development and further training in their fields of application. In

1990 his sons take over the management of the company.

On 19 August 2000, Robert Mathys die after a short illness in his eightieth year.
