Till the end of 2009 Robert Mathys Jr. was the managing director of the RMS Foundation in Bettlach, Switzerland. Before, he managed the research and development division of Mathys Medical Ltd in Bettlach for 20 years. From 1964 to 1968, he finished his studies at the ETH Zurich and was awarded a diploma in mechanical engineering.

Robert Mathys Jr. is a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society (USA), the European Society of Biomaterials, and the European Society of Biomechanics, a scientific member of the AO/ASIF Switzerland, honorary member of the AO Foundation, and an extraordinary member of the Swiss Society of Orthopaedics. His inter­ests focus on research and development of materials and products in traumatology and orthopaedics.
